There have been many academic studies into beards over the years, whether they actually make you warmer or colder, whether strong beard growth can be linked to head hair loss and how attractive women really find beards. A study from 2008 got the responses of 60 women on five different facial hair styles ranging from clean shaven to Gandalf. As you can imagine, men with light stubble and trimmed beards were most attractive as both short and long term partners, whereas men with full beards were rated for things such as social maturity, being a good parent but also being more masculine and therefore more aggressive.
As we are sure you realise, some of those features are particularly attractive to some women – others aren’t, so this case is far from cut and dry at the moment.
Another study by the University of Queensland in 2016 produced some similar findings. This experiment showed the images of men with various styles of facial hair to over 8000 women and in some cases even manipulated the images to make other facial features more masculine or feminine. Stubble once again was seen as the most attractive overall and rated highly for short term relationships, with full beards deemed more appealing for long-term relationships.
An earlier study by well known scientist in the field of beards and facial hair, Dr Barnaby Dixson, also found that the more facial hair, the higher the masculinity rating – particularly among women in the fertile phase of their menstrual cycle (which is in their 20s to early 30s).
So the long and the short of it appears pretty straight forward chaps. Women generally likes beards with heavy stubble being the most sexy followed by a full beard for settling down and being a responsible man. So there we have it, when you meet the girl of your dreams – take it down to a sexy stubble. As the relationship grows, allow your beard to do the same! Everyone’s a winner.
