We have had our first few days of really hot weather here in the UK for 2018. And just like every year before it, we are sure that it will turn out those few hot days in April – are all we getting for the rest of the year. We are not ones to be pessimistic however, so lets start planning for that hot summer sun and understand what, if anything, needs to be done to create our summer beard…
Beards can get a bad reputation in hot weather. As many believe, they don’t in fact insulate your face, so you don’t need to worry about developing a particularly wet face as soon as the mercury rises over 25 degrees. In fact, beards have been proven to have a cooling effect in hot weather as they trap sweat close to your face, which feels cold when caught by a cool breeze.
Bear in mind however, as the cool weather retreats – your beard doesn’t have to follow suit…
Your beard wont warm your face
Although as we covered in our article about whether your beard can keep you warm in the winter, beards do act as a great wind break – they do not insulate however. And well that windbreak wont do much for you in the hot summer sun but equally it wont result in your face getting stupidly hot. So don’t worry, no need to shave it all off!
Step up your cleansing game
Your beard may not act as a woollen scarf, but it can cause irritation when your skin is hot and damp, so it’s all the more important to keep it properly cleaned. Scrub it down every morning with a specialised cleanser, like Bear Grooming Beard Wash: This will remove any grime or debris that might accumulate in your beard, causing inflammation and itchiness.
Have your beard oil on hand
Keep your beard hydrated and fresh during that scorching summer morning, there is nothing worse than a dry and brittle beard in the summer heat. Give our Black Pepper & Sandalwood beard oil a go.
This may sound a bit like overkill, but a healthy beard starts with a healthy body – that is why we put so much focus on our supplements as well as our outer grooming products. Summer is the season of dehydration, which can cause your hairs to grow brittle, and even more prone to breakage. Giving your beard a good clean with your beard wash, conditioning it with your beard oil and downing a few pints of water a day will ensure you stay feeling and looking in top condition.
If all else fails…
If your summer beard just doesn’t seem to be happening, irritation persists despite your best offers – then you can always compromise with a little trim. You can have a very short beard, and yet still have a beard. No need to go full naked face – a shorter beard will allow the air to flow around your face easier keeping the skin clear and cool.
