It is time for our next Beauty and the Beard blog where we catch up with some of the world’s most interesting women in the fields of sport, music, writing, film and more. This time around we had the pleasure of talking to the amazing Heather Victoria, a singer and songwriter from 9th Wonder’s @Jamlarecords. Check out what Heather had to say on her music idols, her work with people such as the late Mac Miller and Jadakiss as well as on how she likes her man to dress and smell. You can also catch Heather’s latest single #Japan ???:
Its great to hear boom bap with contemporary soul. It works perfectly and the sounds are very much appreciated here at Bear Grooming. What did you listen to growing up and who were your musical idols?
HV: I listened to pretty much nothing but R&B, Soul and funk. (Very little rap). My parents both played nothing but 70s, 80s, & 90s Soul and R&B jams. My musical idols would have to be people like: Anita Baker, Monica, MJB, Toni Braxton and Bey.
We love that Neo Soul vibe and ‘Japan’ is a very cool song with a nostalgic feel to it, what inspired you to make that?
HV: Thanks! We wanted to make something groovy, something people can feel, and something people would want to play even if it was only the instrumental!
We find it very cool that 9th Wonder was previously your teacher at university. How did you approach him with your music and what’s it like working with the man?
HV: haha! I find it cool too! It’s a cool addition to my story. I simply tried my best to build a rapport after class but it was very hard because there were always so many people wanting his attention. I reached out via Facebook instant messenger, and when he didn’t respond, I made my way to him after class after waiting and waiting. I asked if I could please play him my demo and asked for 15 mins of his time at the studio. He said, “Yes. Today at 4:30.”
What’s it like being part of Jamla Records and working with female rap guru Rapsody?
HV: It’s dope. We’ve all been together since 2010, they’re all my extended family. Working with Rapsody is cool for sure, that’s big sis.
Tough question, but from all of the songs you have written, what is your favourite and why?
HV: Probably “Time Is the Teacher” – I was going through a lot and it was the first time that my own song helped me get through some real life stuff.
You have worked with artists such as the late Mac Miller, Jadakiss, David Banner, who would you love to collab with in the future?
HV: RIP MAC ???? These are some artists I would love to collaborate with: Masego, Terrace Martin, Ronald Glasper, Syd, T.I., and Anderson .Paak
Do you think a man should be into grooming and looking after how he looks? If so is there a limit as to how far it can go?
HV: Yes! Taking 2 hours to get ready is a bit much. (Lol) I agree that a man should groom himself the best that he can and regularly. As long as they have great hygiene, then I don’t see any problems.
You mean like our beard wash?! Haha. What is your thoughts about facial hair on a man? Is it a must? And what is your favourite style of beard?
HV: Ummmmm for me! It’s not a must. My favorite style of beard is a low cut beard for sure. Trimmed and looking shard, clean lines.
How do you like your man to smell? And what are your thoughts on the Bear Grooming scents?
HV: A scent needs to get me, I like it if it is refreshing too. The black pepper and sandalwood you guys use in your stuff is definitely a scent I would go for on a man.
Finally, can you tell us a bit about what is to come from Heather Victoria over the next 6 months or so…
HV: What’s to come? More music is to come for sure ? I also look forward to giving back more in 2019. I want to host a workshop in my hometown (where I grew up Wilson, NC) for kids who are interested in careers within the music industry, dance industry and/or theatre arts.
